Have you always wanted to write (poetry/prose) but aren’t sure where to begin? Writing poetry can be a fun and exciting way to express yourself; a way in to tap into and enhance your creativity. Or perhaps you are already writing poetry (or another genre) and want some guidance and inspiration? Join award-winning poet, prose writer and playwright Gayelene Carbis in a supportive class where you will be encouraged to find your own voice through writing. Classes involve reading classic and contemporary poetry (and prose); writing prompts; and discussion and sharing of ideas and writing – if you want to. Gayelene’s workshops/classes are suitable for beginners and advanced; and for writers of all genres.

“We all become better writers by reading and writing poetry, no matter what genre we write in. The compression of poetry – its attention to language; its imagery; the importance of voice; and its closeness to song – all help us bring closer attention to our work in any genre through reading and talking about poetry, and even trying to write it. I like to demystify poetry by saying ‘Let’s all write ‘a piece of writing’ – whatever it may turn out to be. You don’t have to try to write a poem – just write.’ Through these and various other techniques, I have helped others become prolific writers of poetry – and other genres too. It’s incredibly exciting to see others become excited about language and creative expression, and extending themselves as writers” – Gayelene Carbis
